She finally dozes. A tiny baby, curled up in a warm cocoon of blankets, adorable features arranged in a peaceful half-smile. I adjust her tiny fingers, give the blanket a final tug, and slooowly pick up the camera to get the shot. My finger begins to come down on the shutter button when suddenly, she opens her eyes and moves her arms and legs, completely coming out of the careful pose I had worked for 20 minutes to get her in. I shush her, stroke her downy cheeks, and begin the waiting process all over again.
That’s all part of photographing newborns. It’s not for the impatient. The resulting portraits- of a peaceful, tiny newborn sound asleep- are well worth the effort though. I love knowing that in 10, 15 or 20 years from now, my clients will look at those pictures and will remember how tiny and delicious their children once were.
